Things to do with Kids in San Diego

As part of our recent trip to California we spent 5 days in one of my favourite cities, San Diego. There is no shortage of family friendly activities in San Diego from the beautiful beaches and whale watching to parks and museums, you can really find it all within a short drive. Here are a few of the fun things to do with kids in San Diego.

1. Children’s Pool Beach

Located in the beautiful suburb of La Jolla, the Children’s Pool Beach has become something of a novelty due to the influx of seals in the area. Closed for swimming from mid-December to mid-May, it’s the perfect spot to watch pregnant seals come on shore to birth their new pups. There’s just something magical about watching animals in their natural habitat and the beach offers a perfect opportunity for a “see, but don’t touch experience”.

LaJolla

You can certainly spend the day in La Jolla wandering their downtown area with posh botiques and waterfront restaurants, taking a walk along the beach front, a visit to Birch Aquarium and a beautiful nature walk at Torrey Pines State Park. The beach is free to visit, metered parking can be found along the waterfront or you can park in the downtown area and take a walk to the beach. Please do remember that the seals are wild animals and not to be disturbed. You will find a viewing bridge which allows you to walk across the beach while viewing the seals.

2. The New Children’s Museum

The New Children’s Museum can be found in downtown San Diego just near the Gaslamp District. Dedicated to inspiring children through art and creativity, this museum is suitable for the whole family. We were very kindly gifted entry tickets in exchange for review, but I would have no hesitation to recommend or visit again. It has be to one of the most visually pleasing museums I have ever visited. If you didn’t know better you would think it’s a contemporary art museum for adults, but everything is designed for children to touch and play. The highlight of our visit was definitely ‘No Rules.. Except’ which is an immersive, interactive room filled with 40+ mattresses and over 160 pillow tires for children (and grown ups) to play, crawl, jump and bounce around. My son loved this area so much he cried when we left and museum staff thought he had hurt himself. One employee came over to check on him and when I explained he was just upset to leave, he responded ‘yeah, that happens quite often here!’

New Children's Museum

Other favourite installations included whammock! (a giant, multi-level, crocheted hammock designed for climbing), ‘The Rain House’ which re-creates a rainy day at home where children may play, and ‘Reconnecting to Home’ a 4 story house reflecting different architectural periods in California over time. The only thing I would warn against is that some installations are designed for very young children or those older than 6 years, which could limit some of the activities your child can or will participate in.

SD Museum 2

Don’t forget to visit their award winning cafe where everything is organic, healthy and delicious! It’s some of the cutest cafe food I’ve ever seen and very tasty too. The New Children’s Museum has extended hours for 2020 and will be open Monday – Saturday 9am -5pm and Sunday 11am – 5pm. Entry tickets are $15.50 for ages 1-64. Those over 65 and military with ID are $10. February is Museum Month and you will receive 50% off admission during this time when showing a Museum Month pass! For more information, please click here to find out about Museum Month. Also be sure to check the calendar before you go as there are regular family friendly workshops and activities.

3. Whale Watching

Whale watching season runs from mid-December to April in San Diego where you can catch a view of the grey whale as they make their way from Russia to Mexico! We booked a 3.5 hour cruise with Hornblower Cruises where we saw dolphins, seals and other wildlife. Unfortunately we didn’t spot any whales as we were early in the season, but we were given a return ticket to come back any time in the next year!

IMG_3051.jpg

Many of the whale watching cruises can be very expensive, but we found Hornblower to be quite reasonable with a price of $30 per adult. Children aged 3 and under are free, 4+ are $14 per ticket. There’s so many options from 1 hour to all day, so I’d definitely get out and enjoy the sea and fantastic views of the city. Hopefully you’ll catch a glimpse of the whales too!

4. Balboa Park

Balboa Park is a true work of art featuring 1200 acres to explore with everything from restaurants and museums to playgrounds, gardens and even a zoo. If you need some ideas of things to see with kids, check out the Kid’s Itinerary on the park’s website.

Balboa

Be sure to check out Panama 66 restaurant! There’s loads of kid friendly options on the menu including nutella & banana sandwiches, plus hand crafted food and drink all locally sourced for parents. The museums inside Balboa Park are individually owned and most charge an admission fee. Depending on what your kids are interested in, a few that may be worth your time and money include: the Fleet Science Centre which currently has a a great exhibition called Pause/Play with adult friendly playground fun that allows kids and adults to play together, the San Diego Natural History Museum with dinosaurs, wildlife, and an area called the Backyard designed for toddlers, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum has various model trains and is supposedly one of the world’s largest model railroad museums, lastly; the San Diego Air & Space Museum has an actual Apollo capsule, full scale mars rover, and tons of airplanes. On a logistical note, entry to the park grounds are free and parking is also free if you choose to drive.

Things to Do in Las Vegas with Kids

Las Vegas with kids… you must be crazy?! Contrary to popular belief, there are loads of free and inexpensive things to do in Las Vegas which are perfectly suitable for families and children. For my most recent trip, I really wanted to focus on things for my 3 year old son and actually left Las Vegas wishing we had more time because we simply couldn’t fit everything in our trip. If you’d like to see more photos and videos of our time in Las Vegas please do check out my story highlights over @hillingdonmama! Now let’s get to the list of fun things to do in Las Vegas with kids.

1. All of the totally free hotel displays on the Las Vegas strip!

Since we visited at Christmas time we were really spoiled with beautiful displays and decorations in most of the hotels on the Las Vegas strip. All of these are free to see and since the hotel lobbies are open 24 hours a day; you can pretty much visit at whatever time suits you!

Vegas hotels

Some of our favourite displays for Christmas 2019 included Bellagio, Wynn, The Palazzo at The Venetian and the 15 foot edible gingerbread house at Aria Resort

2. Discovery Children’s Museum in downtown Las Vegas

When researching things to do with kids in Las Vegas, the children’s museum was top of our list. We were very kindly gifted entry tickets to the museum for review purposes, but I would have visited regardless. The aim of the children’s museum is to encourage children to engage in playful and educational experiences which inspires children to become innovative thinkers through the joy of hands on discovery.

Discovery

Our favourite areas were the water play and the role play – hands down one of the best role play areas I’ve seen in a children’s museum with everything from a bank to an airport, a smoothie shop, a car garage, hospital, grocery store and a football stadium. My son would have easily stayed here all day. You will also find soft play, arts & crafts, puppet shows, lego workshops, 3-D printing and more. My three year old absolutely loved it and did not want to leave. The only thing lacking is a cafe or restaurant, so pack yourself lunch/snacks/drinks to get through the day if you plan to spend a few hours here. I would highly recommend a visit to anyone in Las Vegas with kids 0-10.

It’s an easy drive to downtown from the strip area, parking is convenient and you will also be near to Fremont Street, Container Park, and outlet malls to make a full day of this location. Please click here for further details regarding their opening hours and pricing. They are closed on Mondays and major holidays. General admission is $14.50 per person, except for under 1’s which are free.

3. Container Park

I don’t know about you, but sometimes trying to find a suitable place to eat with kids without wanting to tear your hair out can be a challenge. Well, what if I told you that a place exists which offers multiple dining options for parents and an interactive treehouse for kids? Container Park is an open air shopping centre with boutique retail shops, unique restaurants and live entertainment for the whole family.

Container Park

Right in the middle is a large interactive playground featuring The Treehouse, perfect for kids of all ages! Parents can sit and eat while keeping an eye on the kids. The main stage often features free concerts and movies, so make sure you check the schedule before you visit. Even if you’re not hungry, it’s a great place to take the kids to burn off some steam before heading to your next destination and there’s no charge to visit and just check out the play area.

4. SeaQuest

A little off the beaten Strip (see what I did there?!) you will find a place called SeaQuest Las Vegas which is designed as an interactive aquarium and animal experience aimed to educate young children. Many of the displays are set down low for children to see up close and personal. You’ll find everything from sting rays and sharks to parrots, a baby sloth, parakeets and even a capybara!

SeaQuest

It really is a unique experience providing the opportunity to feed and meet so many animals in one space. There is also a small playground located outside the building with an enclosed area if you need a break or to burn off some extra energy during your visit. As part of our gifted experience we were able to meet their new baby sloth, Flash, who was very sweet and sleepy while enjoying his slice of sweet potato. Additionally, we were introduced to Polly, a very chatty white parrot who my son instantly fell in love with. He still talks about it a month later, so I would definitely recommend an animal experience. Entry tickets are $10.95 for ages 2-11 and $16.95 for 12 years+. You can get a $2 discount if you book online and discounts are also available for 55 years+, military and students. Please check the website for various prices regarding animal events and interactions.

Have you been to Las Vegas with kids? What were your favourite activities??

Zimpli Kids: A Review

We were very kindly gifted a few products from Zimpli Kids to try out and review for them. If you aren’t aware of Zimpli Kids, they offer a range of outdoor, bath and play time products. They are non-toxic, no harsh chemicals and easily dispose down the toilet when you’re done (just don’t forget to dilute with water!). The products are suggested for 3+ years and we found the Gelli Play great for sensory play, but I think my two year old son is a little young for the Gelli Baff and Slime Baff as he really wasn’t keen to get in the tub! We may try them again in a bowl to slowly introduce this product.

IMG_20190309_151716

That being said, I would still recommend these products and think they make great gifts for older toddlers through to young teens. There’s loads of ideas on the Zimpli website as to how you can use the products. We created some sensory fun with our Gelli Play and a bowl full of dinosaurs which my little boy loved.

There is loads of product in the packaging, so they will last you ages! It was easy to clean up, no stains left behind and easily washes away when you’re done with play. If you’re not sure how to use the products you can check out their YouTube channel and website for tons of ideas. They’re perfect for a rainy day when you’re stuck indoors or winding down the kids at bath time. Have you tried these products before? Tell me how you’ve used them. A big thanks to Zimpli Kids for their lovely gifts!

Hillingdon Happenings – February 2019

Hello everyone and happy new year! So, it seems the month of January just flew by in a flurry of rainy days and blue Mondays. I struggled getting back into the routing and definitely felt the post holiday slump, but I’m back and getting myself way more organised in 2019. I already have weekly activities planned with my son for the month of February, which means I’ll have lots of family friendly businesses and activities to tell you about in the borough of Hillingdon (or very near by!). If there’s a place or activity you’ve been wondering about in Hillingdon, drop me a line and let me know. In the meantime, have a look at the upcoming events below, all happening in the borough of Hillingdon for the month of February. Please check the direct websites for these events as some do charge a fee and require advanced booking. If you go to any of these activities don’t forget to tag me on your Instagram, Facebook or Twitter @hillingdonmama because I really love hearing that other people had a good time! Enjoy xx

Mum Guilt is Real

Stay at home mother. Working mother. Breastfeeding. Formula feeding. Single mother. One child. Multiple children. It seems no matter what we do as mothers we all will feel the dreaded #mumguilt about something! Why do we never hear about #dadguilt ?? Why do men never seem to second guess themselves about their parenting decisions? Why do they never get the same level of scrutiny that women get? Your mama wasn’t kidding when she told you life was unfair.

Earlier today I posted on Instagram how my little boy didn’t want me to go to work in the morning, crying for me and holding my shoes as he told me “no, no” while I tried to get myself out the door. I work three days a week and on those days my son stays at home with his dad (my husband), so you would think that a situation like that would be pretty guilt free. As he cried and clung to me, I remembered when I first started back to work about 9 months ago. I used to worry that he would forget me and that our relationship would somehow weaken, but given his reaction it seems we are even more attached.

As hard as it is to be a mother, many of us choose to go back to work for the career development, mental stimulation, financial rewards, even just some peace and quiet in the toilets! Whatever your decision, every mother makes it with the intention to be the best mother they can be. I was lucky to spend 18 months at home with my son and it was my choice to go back to work because I felt like I needed to use my brain in a different way. I cherish every moment I spend with my son and on days like today I sometimes wonder if I’ve made the right decision, but when I get to the office I love my job and it brings a different sense of fulfillment to my life, an independence, a purpose. I feel this makes me a better mother and I know my son will be fine. A few minutes later he was playing with daddy in the kitchen and I was able to leave the house.

What would your ideal working situation be? Leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you!

Revisco Restaurant – Uxbridge College

What better way to support the local community of Hillingdon than by supporting the young people at Uxbridge College!? I think this is such a fantastic idea and had to share it on my blog for anyone else who might be interested. Uxbridge College has a training restaurant, Revisco, which allows students to work in industry standard kitchens, preparing and serving meals under the supervision of industry trained chefs. The restaurant is open to the public for lunch on Wednesday 12-1:15pm, Thursday 11:30-12:30 and Friday 12-1:15pm during term time. If you like to eat good quality food then treat yourself to a three course, bistro-style lunch for as little as £8!

What a deal.

To book your table or to find out more please call 01895 853730 or email revisco@uxbridgecollege.ac.uk
